Eagles Volleyball Tops Norfolk State 3-2

NORFOLK, Va. –  Coppin State came from behind to down Norfolk State 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-21, 15-13) on the road on Friday, Oct. 21 in Gill Gymnasium.

The Spartans led the match 2-1 after a 25-16 victory in set three. The Eagles stormed back with back-to-back wins in set four and five. Junior Valiyah Barnes posted four kills in set four while freshman Jasmine Lougheed had four in set five. In sets one and four CSU connected on double figure kills with 11 and 12, respectively.

Coppin State tallied 15 team blocks protecting the net in their second road win of the year. The blocks were paced by Lougheed (11) and freshman Angel Jamerson (6). Prior to this win, the Eagles dropped their previous three matches that went five sets.

Lougheed led the Eagles with a season-best 12 kills and 11 blocks. She posted a .500 attack percentage on 22 attempts against the Spartans while finishing with ten blocks assisted.  Her attack percentage was also an Eagle season-high. In the first two sets she had three kills and then ended strong with four kills in the fifth set.

Jamerson finished with a season-best six blocks and a service ace. She added five kills and was a huge part in CSU's late rally with five assisted blocks in sets four and five.

Freshman Dominique Madarang had a season-high three blocks and notched her eighth double-double of the year with 37 assists and 12 digs. This was Madarang's seventh 30+ assist match and she currently averages 6.87 assists per set.

Freshman Asia Stennis returned to action after missing the last six matches due to an injury and recorded her second double figure kill match with 11 against NSU. In set two, Stennis had a team-high four kills and then added on four more kills in set four.

Defensively, the Eagles had a pair finish with double figure digs. Junior Glorines Rosado garnered a match-high 19 digs while Madarang aided with 12. Junior Guro Froberg and Stennis both had nine digs and junior Jennifer Gell had eight digs.

The Eagles were successful in ending a three match skid and will look to extend their win streak on Sunday, Oct. 23 at Hampton beginning at 3 p.m.
