HANOVER, Md. – The Coppin State baseball team dropped its home opener to Lehigh University 17-5 at Joe Cannon Stadium Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest.
Leading Coppin State's offense was
George Dragon and
Mike Wright each of whom had two hits each. For Dragon, it was his seventh multi-hit game of the season while Wright registered his third multi-hit effort in his last five games.
Dragon slugged his second home run of the season, a two-run to right centerfield in the bottom of the first inning that tied the game at 2-2. In reaching base in every game this season, Dragon's average rose to rose to .365 following a 2-for-4 performance. He leads Coppin State with 12 runs batted in and 23 hits.
His homer was the fourth consecutive one hit by a Coppin State player that either tied or gave the Eagles a lead. In his last 13 plate appearances over three games, Dragon has nine hits for a .692 average.
Darien Percell extended his hitting streak to five games with a single and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning that pulled the Eagles to within, 4-3.
William Brown also had a hit and a RBI for Coppin State (1-16 overall)
The Eagles collected 10 walks as a team. It was the second time this season the patient Eagles finished with double digit walks in a game this season. Over their last three games, the Eagles have drawn 28 bases on balls.
Later in the game, the pitching combination of
Chris Estrada and Chris Vasquez allowed one run over three innings.
Leading Lehigh (4-13) was Jacen Nalenski, who drove home six runs. The Mountain Hawks also got four hits from leadoff hitter Justin Pacchioli.
Coppin State returns to action Saturday when it visits Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
