Lady Eagles prepare for rematch at Morgan State

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team plays its final road game Saturday afternoon against cross-town and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Morgan State.

It will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Eagles (5-20 overall, 4-10 MEAC) opened the month of love with a 62-53 heartbreaker to the Bears. Janelle Lane had 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal in the loss.

Coppin State hopes to end its travels on a high note but will need to get back on the good foot after falling to defending MEAC champion Hampton, 69-44, Monday evening. Genesis Lucas once against led the way for the Eagles with 19 points.

The Eagles held the Pirates to shooting 30.4 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from three-point territory.

Lucas has led Coppin State in scoring six times and tallied double digits 11 times this season. Her performances against Delaware State and Norfolk State earned the redshirt freshman her first career MEAC Rookie of the Week honor. Since entering the starting lineup on Jan. 19, she averages 13.8 points, 4.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds per contest.

In the contest against Hampton, junior Amber Griffin recorded her 280th career assist. She ranks fourth among Coppin State's all-time women's basketball assists leaders, surpassing Talia Sutton '07. Griffin needs four assists to move into third place. Her 83 assists this season places her sixth in the MEAC.

Coppin State has the conference's best three-point field goal percentage (32.1).

Braennan Farrar's career- and game-high 23 points wasn't enough as Morgan State (9-18, 6-8) dropped a 67-59 decision to North Carolina A&T Monday. It was the fifth consecutive loss for the Lady Bears. Farrar also had six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Tracey Carrington added 13 points. Carrington has 1, 495 career points, which ranks her third among all-time points leaders in Morgan State history.

Farrar stands 10th in scoring (13.2 ppg), eighth in free-throw percentage (74.4) and ninth in steals per game (2.1) in the MEAC.

Coppin State host Delaware State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for its final home game of the season.
