GAME PREVIEW: Norfolk State at Coppin State

BALTIMORE – Coppin State welcomes Norfolk State to the Physical Education Complex for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rematch Saturday at 2 p.m. 
 
The Eagles (5-18 overall, 4-8 MEAC) lead the all-time series, 24-6. This will be the second time the two teams have met during the 2014-15 season.

Look at what Genesis Lucas has done since becoming a starter.
Coppin State opened MEAC play against NSU in January with a 58-56 victory. Jordan Swails refused to let the Eagles lose with 16 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Genesis Lucas recorded her first career double digit game with 12 points and added four steals. She broke the tie and provided the winning margin for Coppin State. Omaah Tayong had her third career double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds).
 
Both teams have been working hard in the MEAC since facing off earlier in the season. Coppin State has a two-game winning streak thanks to an 80-62 decision over Delaware State Monday night. Lucas had a career-high 22 points and game-best six assists. Bria Harris added 15 points and 12 rebounds. Swails had her second straight double-double performance (19 points, 10 rebounds). Amber Griffin tied her career-high with 12 points.
 
Coppin State was balanced on both offense and defense, scoring 27 points off of DSU's 21 turnovers. The Eagles shot 46.8 percent from the field. They put up 48 points in the paint and outrebounded the Hornets, 46-28.
 
Swails leads the Eagles, averaging 10.9 points and is the second-best rebounder with 6.1 boards per game. She stands second in the MEAC in three-point field goal percentage (42.1). Janelle Lane averages 9.9 points while Harris has 9.1 points per contest. Harris also tops the team in rebounding (7.5 rpg).
 
Coppin State has the second-best three-point field goal percentage (30.6) and fifth-best field goal percentage (37.6) in the conference.
 
Norfolk State (9-14, 8-4) was also in action on Monday in a 64-56 victory over Morgan State. The Spartans never trailed, thanks to Rae Corbo's 25 points. Kayla Roberts added 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  NSU outrebounded MSU 47-28 and shot 77 percent from the foul line (17-of-22).
 
Corbo ranks second among MEAC scorers, averaging 21.3 points. She is the best free-throw shooter in the conference (87.7 percent) and third in three-point field goal percentage (37.3). Roberts was named the MEAC's Rookie of the Week for the third straight time on Monday. It is the seventh time this season she has earned the honor. Roberts averages 12.1 points and tops the conference in rebounding (9.7 rpg).
 
The Spartans lead the MEAC in free-throw percentage (72.2), field goal percentage (37.2), assists (12.3) and defensive rebounds (28.7).
 
Coppin State hits the road to face Hampton Monday at 5:30 p.m. It will be the first encounter between the two squads since they battled each other in last year's MEAC championship.
