BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team gears up for a rematch against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rival Howard Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
The Eagles (3-18 overall, 2-8 MEAC) are trying to shake off Monday's 63-53 overtime loss to Savannah State. The Lady Tigers sent the game into extra time thanks to a layup with eight-tenths of a second remaining.
Redshirt freshman
Genesis Lucas finished with a career-high 16 points, her sixth time posting double figures in the last seven games. Although foul trouble kept her sidelined, junior forward
Janelle Lane put up 13 points against Savannah State.
This defeat was somewhat eerily similar to the Eagles' last meeting with Howard in January that resulted in a 68-66 setback for Coppin State. With 10 seconds remaining, the Eagles had the potential game-winning basket waved off and missed a pair of free throws with .7 seconds left that could've sent things to overtime.
Jordan Swails and Lane are the top scorers for Coppin State, averaging 9.9 and 9.8 points, respectively. Senior
Bria Harris leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game.
Howard (3-20, 3-7) also had its hands full on Monday when it dropped an 80-61 decision to Hampton. Victoria Gonzales tallied 23 points on 7-of-12 from the floor and 9-of-13 from the foul line. She also pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
The Lady Bison lead the all-time series, 37-26.
Coppin State hits the road to face Delaware State Monday at 5:30 p.m.
