Coppin men fall short against Hampton in OT thriller

BALTIMORE- The Coppin State (2-5) men's basketball team lost its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) home opener 74-71 to Hampton in a thrilling overtime contest Saturday night at the Physical Education Complex.
 
It was the Eagles second consecutive loss to the Pirates after both teams alternated wins in each of the previous five years. The all time series is now deadlocked at 18 apiece.
 
Junior forward Joshua Treadwell had a night to remember in Coppin State's setback to Hampton.
 
Treadwell, a native of Newark, N.J., was a force in the paint as he routinely weaved his way through the Pirates defense for a career high 22 points. He scored 12 of his game high 22 points in the first half on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-3 from the 3-point range. Treadwell was also a perfect 2-of-2 from the foul line.
 
Treadwell's career night helped Coppin State win the battle of the benches 29-21. It was Treadwell's fifth game scoring in double figures this season.
 
Overall, the Eagles had three player score in double figures.
 
Guards Trevon Seymore and Keith Shivers turned in strong performances for the Eagles setting and matching career highs of their own.
 
Seymore tied his career best in points and rebounds. He finished the game with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in over 40 minutes of game action. It was Seymore's third consecutive double digit scoring game.
 
Shivers poured in 14 points and grabbed a career and team high nine rebounds. He also had three assists, three steals and a pair of thunderous dunks, including a powerful finish off of a steal that sent the fans at PEC Arena in a frenzy just seconds before the halftime buzzer.
 
Shivers is averaging 14.5 points and 4.7 rebounds in the last four contests for the Eagles.
 
Reginald Johnson, Jr., led Hampton with 22 points, two assists and two steals. Quinton Chievous finished with a double double scoring 21 points and adding 10 rebounds for the Pirates.
 
Coppin State led at halftime for the second game this season and led by as many as 10 points in the first half.
 
The game featured eight ties and six lead changes, including seven ties and five lead changes in the second half and overtime. The Eagles have went into overtime in two of their last three games.
 
Coppin State will return to action for another MEAC home showdown against Norlfok State Monday December 7. Tipoff is at 7:30 in the Physical Education Complex.
