BALTIMORE – The Coppin State men's basketball team dropped an 81-77 decision to Interstate 83 rival Towson in overtime at the Physical Education Complex Saturday evening.
In a riveting game plagued with 61 fouls Coppin State (2-3) battled the Towson Tigers (4-3) down to the final seconds. Four free throws by Towson in the final seven seconds provided the winning margin in a contest featuring 15 ties and eight lead changes.
The Eagles couldn't answer and left PEC Arena with a bitter end to the Thanksgiving weekend. Coppin State played with heart, intensity and grit all game long.
Overall, the Eagles had five players score in double figures led by
Joshua Treadwell's 15 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe in 34 minutes. Guard
Keith Shivers added 14 points, four rebounds, two steals and two powerful; highlight reel worthy dunks in the second half. He tied his season-high scoring total.
James Sylvester chipped in 12 points, four rebounds and one block. It was his third time scoring in double figures this season.
Treadwell and Sylvester helped Coppin State win the battle of the benches, 37-16.
Junior guards
Trevon Seymore and
Christian Kessee helped Coppin with 10 points apiece. Seymore had another all around solid performance adding four rebounds, two assists and a team high three blocks.
The Eagles defense forced 23 turnovers and harassed the Tigers all over the floor. Both teams shot a combined 75 free throws. Coppin State, which entered the game fourth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 3-pointers made per game, made seven.
Byron Hawkins led the Tigers with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. William Adala Moto added 17 points and five rebounds. He scored six of Towson's 12 points in overtime.
Coppin State will head on the road to Akron, OH for a showdown with the Akron Zips on Wednesday night December 2 at 8:00 p.m.
