BALTIMORE – The Coppin State women's basketball team is more than excited to be returning home after beginning the season with two road games in four days.
The Lady Eagles (0-2) will host the UMBC Retrievers (0-2) Thursday at noon for their 2015-16 home opener. This game will be "School Day" the first of many home-themed games this season. Local elementary schools will be present for the game.
Coppin State fell to UMBC 65-78 in last season's match up, pushing the all-time series lead to 13-11 in favor of the Retrievers.
Senior guard
Amber Griffin recorded her 300th career assist, becoming the third CSU women's player – and first since 2008 – to reach that milestone in program history during Coppin's 96-64 loss to West Virginia Monday evening. She finished the game with eight points and four assists.
Junior guard
Keena Samuels has paced the Lady Eagles with 12 points per game during their two game road trip. She led Coppin State in scoring with 12 points in its loss at VCU.
Seniors
Janelle Lane and
Jordan Swails also averaged double digits in scoring in the Lady Eagles first two games. Lane is averaging 11 points per game and three rebounds per contest. She scored a team and season-high 13 points against West Virginia while also going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. She has 24 career double-digit scoring games.
Swails tallied 12 points and grabbed three rebounds against West Virginia and shot a perfect 2-of-2 from long range. She is averaging 10.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Senior
Omaah Tayong grabbed a team and season high nine boards on Monday evening. She is averaging six points and seven rebounds so far this year.
Coppin State is second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in 3-point field goal percentage (45.5%) and fourth in assists per game (12.5).
The UMBC Retrievers are coming off two losses to Columbia and Penn, both from the Ivy League Conference.
Juniors Taylor McCarley and Pandora Wilson lead UMBC in scoring with 10.5 points per game apiece. Junior forward Chukwuma Chiamaka is averaging nine rebounds per contest to lead the Retrievers.
The Lady Eagles will return to action when they head to the road to take on cross-town rival Towson University on November 22 at 4:00 p.m. ?
