Lady Eagles looking to fly high

BALTIMORE – The Lady Eagles host Florida A&M Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest.

Coppin State will be celebrating Teachers Appreciation Night where any teacher/educator who shows an ID is admitted free to the game.

Coppin State and FAMU have met 40 times since 1993 with the Rattlesnakes leading the all-time series, 22-18. Last year, the Eagles spent Valentine's Day weekend in Tallahassee where they dropped an 83-80 decision. It was the first time the two teams had met since 2011.

The Eagles (2-12 overall, 1-2 MEAC) began their two-game homestand on Saturday afternoon with a 61-58 loss to Bethune-Cookman. Junior guard Jordan Swails finished with her first career double-double thanks to 17 points and 11 rebounds. She notched 10 of her points in the second half, bringing her three-game total to 60 percent (32 points) scoring after intermission. Bria Harris added 13 points and eight rebounds while Janelle Lane tallied 11 points and five boards. Amber Griffin never left the floor and tied her career-high 10 assists. She also had eight points, three steals and three rebounds.

Griffin raised her career assists total to 256, which ranks eighth among the all-time assists leaders in school history.

Despite being setback, Coppin State tends to put the pressure on defensively, holding B-CU to shooting 36.9 percent from the field. It was the third MEAC opponent that the Eagles have held under 37 percent from the floor.

Swails and Lane pace the Eagles in scoring, both averaging 10.0 points per contest. Swails has led Coppin State in scoring in three consecutive competitions. Harris puts up 9.5 points per game. She tops the team and ranks fifth in the MEAC in rebounding (7.7). Griffin has a 4.2 assist average, which stands third in the conference and leads the Eagles.

FAMU also played on Saturday but couldn't push past Morgan State, falling 57-50. Sophomore Olivia Antilla earned 18 points and junior Taneka Rubin added 15 points. Freshman Brooksie McGraw topped the team on the boards with seven rebounds.

The Lady Rattlers (4-12, 1-3 MEAC) trailed 29-23 at halftime but started the second leg of the game on a 13-6 run to give them a 36-35 edge. Morgan was able to rally and take a one-point lead with three and a half minutes left. With the boost, the Bears went on a 10-4 run to close out the game and hand FAMU is fifth straight loss.

Antilla leads the team and is the 10th-best scorer in the MEAC, averaging 12.4 points per game. Rubin isn't far behind with 10.4 points per contest. Junior Khadejra Young averages 9.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.8 steals per game.

The Eagles embark on a three-game road trip starting in Durham at North Carolina Central on Sunday at 2 p.m.
