BALTIMORE – Coppin State wraps up its non-conference schedule against Virginia Commonwealth University Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
SERIES HISTORYVCU leads the all-time series between the two teams, 8-0. It has been two years since the Eagles and Rams have faced each other. In their last meeting, Coppin State fought hard before dropping a 57-46 decision.
LAST TIME OUTJunior guard
Amber Griffin led Coppin State with 10 points in its 110-51 setback to 14th-ranked Maryland in the Physical Education Complex. The Eagles (1-9) had solid efforts from
Bria Harris (eight points along with a game-high 11 rebounds),
Jordan Swails (nine points) and
Janelle Lane (eight points). It was the third time this season Harris has grabbed double-digit rebounds. Meanwhile, Swails was perfect from beyond the arc, making both of her shots. In addition to her five rebounds,
Tanaysa Henderson added seven points. Despite making 47.8 percent of their shots in the second half, the Eagles were unable to keep up with the fast pace set by the Terrapins.
LOOKING AT VCUAs members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, VCU was invited to participate in last year's Women's NIT. In the first round of the tournament, the Rams fell to Princeton, 94-76. Currently, VCU is enjoying a nine-game home winning streak, which is tied for 22nd in the country. The Rams (7-4) defeated Texas-Pan American, 64-43, last Sunday. The victory marked the 100th career win for first-year head coach Beth O'Boyle. The Rams had four players scoring in double figures. Sophomore Isis Thorpe led the team with 14 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Junior Adaeze Alaeze finished with 12 points and seven boards. Sophomores Kiera Robinson and Chadarryl Clay added 10 points apiece.
TOUGH SLEDDINGCoppin State's December schedule reads like the Top 25 poll. The Eagles have faced three teams currently ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll: Maryland (No. 14), Georgia (No. 19) and West Virginia (No. 24). Each of these ranked teams, along with VCU, participated in postseason play last season.
DEFENDING THE NESTIn consecutive games against Virginia Union and Georgia, the Eagles permitted an average of 52.5 points. For the season, Coppin State has held four teams below 40 percent shooting. The Eagles held Georgia to a season-low point total (49) and shooting percentage (26.3). At Miami, Coppin State's second half defensive efforts held the Hurricanes to 38.3 percent shooting from the field.
