BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team won its seventh-straight match with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14) victory over South Carolina State on Friday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles now stand at an impressive 19-3 on the year while remaining undefeated in MEAC play at 9-0.x
TaKenya Stafford laid down a match-high 13 kills on .455 swinging while
Geraldyn Palacios recorded a career-high 12 kills on just 15 swings to hit a whopping .857.
Paola Caten and
Laila Ibrahim tallied eight kills apiece while
Hope Casel and
Andrea Serrano chipped in with two each.
Andrea Tsvetanova had a match-high 19 assists along with seven digs and a pair of aces in just two sets while Serrano finished a dig shy of a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs.
Ibrahim led the CSU defense at the net with five blocks with Palacios and Casel adding two each. In the backrow,
Coco Figueroa led the way with 12 digs, followed by Serrano, Tsvetanova and the duo of Stafford and Caten with six digs apiece.
Ashley Roman was credited with four digs in her lone set.
Coppin hit .309 for the match compared to just .044 for the Bulldogs.
Set 1
- Ibrahim and Casel got Coppin off to a great start with a pair of blocks, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
- South Carolina responded to tie it up at four before a 4-0 Eagles run highlighted by a kill from Ibrahim and a block by Palacios and Caten.
- After the Bulldogs pulled to within, 10-7, Palacios recorded three kills as CSU scored six of the next seven to double up the visitors, 16-8.
- Another 4-0 CSU run which featured an ace by Tsvetanova made it a 20-9 margin and kills from Caten and Palacios sealed the set.
Set 2
- Once again the Eagles got out quick which was matched by a run by the Bulldogs, but the Eagles got some breathing room with a 7-2 run.
- South Carolina State kept the set within single digits but got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
Set 3
- A 9-1 run midway through the final set turned a 13-10 lead into a 22-11 margin as Coppin recorded eight kills and an ace during the stretch.
- The visitors scored two-straight before Palacios recorded a pair of kills followed by another by Ibrahim to finish the match.
