BALTIMORE – Coppin State's volleyball team picked up its 20
th win of the season with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21) victory over North Carolina Central University on Sunday afternoon at PEC Arena. CSU has now won eight-straight matches, matching the second-longest streak in school history, and improve to 20-3 overall and a perfect 10-0 in league play.
This is the second-straight season, and second time ever, that Coppin has won at least 20 matches.
Hope Casel led Coppin with 14 kills on .435 swinging along with a career-high six blocks while
TaKenya Stafford notched a double-double with 12 kills and ten digs.
Geraldyn Palacios also reached double-digits with ten kills and pair of blocks as
Paola Caten and
Laila Ibrahim added eight kills apiece. Ibrahim hit a team-high .538 and added four blocks.
Andrea Tsvetanova also recorded a double-double, tallying 41 assists with ten digs to go with a pair of kills and aces. She quarterbacked the offense to a .320 hitting percentage while
Ashley Roman led the backrow with 14 digs, holding NCCU to a .180 hitting percentage. Roman was credited with a season-high six assists.
Andrea Serrano and
Coco Figueroa had ten and seven digs, respectively, with Figueroa adding a pair of aces and assists on the offensive end.
Set 1
- Coppin rallied from a four-point deficit a couple times before managing to tie the score at 17 following a kill from Ibrahim and an ace by Tsvetanova.
- NCCU responded with a 5-2 run before extending its lead back to 24-20.
- CSU scored three-straight with back-to-back errors by NCCU and a kill from Stafford before the guests took the set with a kill.
Set 2
- Coppin trailed early on but used a 6-0 run to turn a 6-5 deficit into an 11-6 lead with Casel tallying three kills and a pair of blocks during the stretch.
- NCCU got no closer than four points as Casel and Palacios added a pair of kills during another CSU mini run to double up NCCU, 16-8 and Coppin took the set by the same margin.
Set 3
- CSU started from behind once again in the third set and took its first lead at 14-13 after a kill from Caten and a pair of NCCU errors.
- After trading points, Coppin began to pull away with a 5-1 run as Stafford recorded a kill and an ace to start the stretch.
- Casel, Caten and Stafford added kills for Coppin's final three points of the frame to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4
- Coppin never trailed in the final set and used a 5-1 run early on to take a 12-8 lead after three-straight NCCU errors.
- Central pulled to within 22-19 before Casel and Ibrahim combined for a block to stop a 4-1 run by the guests.
- After two-straight points by NCCU, Coppin got back-to-back kills from Ibrahim and Caten to seal it.
