MADISON, N.J. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped a back-and-forth NEC matchup at Wagner, 10-9 on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles fell to 9-35 overall and 9-20 in the NEC while the Seahawks improved to 26-20 on the year and 21-8 in league play.
Angel Garcia and
Marcus Sanders drove in two runs apiece with Sanders slugging a two-run home run while Garcia and
Terrell Milliner connected for doubles. Coppin had just four hits but took advantage of six walks and four Wagner errors.
Nicco Holland did not receive a decision in the start, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out three in 4.2 innings.
Jake Cumming was charged with six earned runs over the next 3.0 innings before
Mekenna Wakakuwa received the loss, giving up the game-winning run in the ninth over two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Wagner struck first for a run in the first and tacked on two more in the third before Sanders' two-run shot cut the deficit to 3-2. Coppin took its first lead of the game in the sixth on a two-run double by Garcia, scoring both
Jordan Treadwell and
Armando (AJ) Hurtado.
Nelson Grajales came around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 6-3 lead.
The Seahawks responded with two runs in their half of the frame and retook the lead with two more runs in the seventh.
A couple of wild pitches gave the Eagles two runs in the eighth with
Pedro Agosto and Grajales crossing the plate to give Coppin an 8-7 lead. Once again the hosts were able to respond, scoring twice on two hits to go back on top, 9-8.
In the ninth,
Emilio Feliciano drew a leadoff walk and got to second on Hurtado's single through the left side. Agosto then reached on a throwing error and Feliciano was able to score all the way from second to tie the score at nine.
Wagner started its final at-bat with a one-out walk, and after a steal of second base, the Seahawks won it with a walk-off single through the right side of the infield.
