Baseball Falls to Towson in Opener of Eight-Game Homestand

HANOVER, Md. – A trio of Eagles drove in two runs each as the Coppin State baseball team fell to Towson, 14-7, on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles now stand at 5-22 overall while the Tigers improved to 14-15 on the year.

Noah Hogan, Jordan Treadwell and Armando (AJ) Hurtado all had a pair of RBI, with Hogan leading the way, going 2-for-3 with a run and two walks. Treadwell also drew a pair of walks, as did Marcus Sanders who also scored twice and produced a couple webgems at third base.

Coppin used five pitchers who combined to strike out ten batters but also walked 14. Mekenna Wakakuwa received the loss despite throwing a season-high 3.0 innings while allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out three.  Brandon Stephens also struck out three and gave up two runs in 1.1 innings. Keith Wallace and Edwin Sanchez were charged with four earned runs apiece before Jackson Montgomery threw 2.0 scoreless innings and fanning three.

Nearly all of the runs came in three different innings with Towson getting on the board first with a four-run third inning.  Coppin cut the margin to a single run with three runs in the bottom half of the frame, with Treadwell tripling to left center to score Sanders and Hogan. Hurtado followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-3 score.

Towson struck for two runs in the fifth and the game remained in reach until the Tigers erupted for eight runs in the seventh to go up, 14-3.  The Eagles extended the game with three runs in the seventh with Terrell Milliner driving in the first on a fielder's choice before Hogan singled to right, bringing in Milliner and Sanders.

Hurtado drove in another run in the ninth with a bases-loaded walk to bring in the final run.

CSU is back home for the next seven-straight games, starting with a three-game NEC series against Central Connecticut State on April 10-12.  Friday's game is set for 3 pm, followed by a 1 pm start on Saturday and 12 pm on Sunday.
