Softball Strikes First But Falls to Howard in Series Finale

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Coppin State's softball team took an early lead but dropped its series finale to league-leading Howard, 7-3, on Sunday afternoon at Nationals Youth Academy.  The Eagles fell to 8-22 overall and 7-11 in the MEAC.

Giselle Ulloa and Yasmin Burrell both recorded a hit and an RBI while Ulloa also drew a pair of walks. Emily Quintero scored twice while going 1-for-2 with a walk.  In the circle, Brooklyn Lee-Scott allowed five runs on four hits in 3.2 innings before Quintero gave up two runs while striking out three over the final 2.1 innings.

Quintero scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead after reaching on a one-out single.

Howard tied it up with a run in the second before taking the lead with a run in the third and extending its advantage to 5-1 with a three-run fourth.

Ulloa doubled to left in the fifth, driving in Quintero all the way from first to cut the deficit to three, but the Bison got the run back and added another in their half of the frame. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth, and the Eagles were able to record a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Burrell to score Kylee Sandino, but a double play ended the game.

CSU closes the regular season on April 25-26 with a three-game series at Morgan State.  Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 pm, followed by a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
