HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team allowed six runs over the final two innings in a 12-8 loss to LIU on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles fell to 7-26 overall and 7-13 in the NEC while the Sharks improved to 15-16 on the year and 14-6 in league play.
Four CSU players had a pair of hits as
Angel Garcia and
Nelson Grajales combined to drive in five runs and score three more.
Emilio Feliciano and
Terrell Milliner also had RBIs while Garcia and Grajales drew walks as well.
Dillon Kirksey had a quality start on the mound, allowing just three earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters in 7.0 innings.
Justin Ritz took the loss, giving up six runs on two hits in 1.1 innings before
Keith Wallace retired both batters he faced to end the ninth.
For the second-straight game, the Eagles got out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run first on RBI singles from Garcia, Grajales, Feliciano and Milliner following a leadoff single by
Noah Hogan.
LIU got three runs back in the second before tying the score in the third.
Pedro Agosto scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles back the lead in their half of the inning, and he also scored in the fifth to extend the advantage to 6-4.
After the Sharks cut the margin to a run in the sixth, the Eagles scored twice in the seventh on a triple from Garcia, followed by a single by Grajales.
In the eighth, LIU moved to within, 8-6 before scoring five on just two hits while taking advantage of three walks and two hit batters in the ninth. Grajales walked to lead off the ninth while Feliciano followed with a single before a triple play ended the game.
Coppin and LIU close their series at 1 pm on Sunday, April 19 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
