TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's softball team put together a pair of great efforts in the second day of the Towson Tiger Invite, but dropped games to UMass Lowell, 5-0, and the Tigers, 5-4 on Sunday at Tiger Softball Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 1-7 on the season.
Game 1: UMass Lowell def. Coppin State, 5-0
The Eagles managed just two hits against the Riverhawks but got a solid outing from
Brooklyn Lee-Scott in the circle. Allowing just five runs on six hits in 6.0 innings, Lee-Scott held UMass-Lowell to just two runs through the first five innings before giving up three runs in the sixth.
Julianna Mejia and
Leslie Sereno had hits for Coppin while Mejia,
Giselle Ulloa and
Emily Quintero also drew walks. The duo singled and walked to lead off the fourth before advancing into scoring position on a passed ball. Quintero loaded the bases by drawing a two-out walk but Coppin failed to capitalize.
Game 2: Towson def. Coppin State, 5-4
Xzylia Marvilla had a pair of hits while
Brooklyn Tapusoa had a three-run double as the Eagles tallied eight hits.
Debra Hyde pitched a complete game, allowing five runs in 6.2 innings.
After two scoreless innings, Towson took a 1-0 lead in the third before the Eagles erupted for four runs in the fourth. Singles by
Leslie Sereno and
Emily Quintero sandwiched an error as
Cameran Corbett reached first. Tapusoa then cleared the bases with a double to center field before scoring from third on a single by Maravilla.
After a pitching change, the Eagles continued to threaten with singles by
Aniyah Haley and
Julianna Mejia, but the next two players popped out.
Towson got a run back in the bottom half of the inning before pulling to within one after sixth and winning it with back-to-back sacrifice flies in the seventh.
Up Next: Coppin heads to N.C. Central for the MEAC opener on March 14-15 before hosting Albany in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17.
