CARY, N.C. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of games at North Carolina Central University on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park to open MEAC play. CSU (1-9) was edged, 2-0, in the opener and 8-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1: NC Central def. Coppin State, 2-0
Debra Hyde allowed just one earned run on six hits while striking out two but did not get any run support in game one as
Julianna Mejia and
Emily Quintero had the team's only base hits.
Brooklyn Lee-Scott threw a scoreless sixth while striking out one.
NC Central scored a run in the bottom of the first but only managed another run in the fourth as Hyde kept Coppin in the game. CSU put a runner on base in every inning from the second through sixth but was unable to capitalize.
Game 2: NC Central def. Coppin State, 8-1
Emily Quintero and
Giselle Ulloa had base hits for Coppin in the nightcap as Ulloa's went for extra bases.
Brooklyn Lee-Scott, who also got the start in the circle, scored the team's only run of the afternoon in the fifth inning.
Central once again took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first before tacking on another in both the third and fourth. Coppin got on the board in the fifth as Lee-Scott reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored as
Brooklyn Tapusoa reached on an error.
The hosts came right back with five runs on six hits in the bottom half of the inning before Hyde finished the game in relief, allowing a run on three hits in 2.0 innings.
