TEANECK, N.J. – Coppin State's baseball team led 3-0 early on, but fell at FDU, 24-5, on Friday afternoon at Naimoli Complex. The Eagles fell to 2-11 overall and 2-2 in the NEC while the Knights improved to 6-7 and 3-1 in league play.
Four different Eagles posted a base hit while
Brennen Barczai and
Noah Hogan drove in runs with those hits. Also, driving in runs were
Emilio Feliciano and
Agustin Murillo, Jr., while
Armando (AJ) Hurtado doubled for the team's lone extra-base hit.
Jake Cumming gave up nine earned runs in the first 1.2 innings before giving way to
Jack Joyce who struck out three while allowing two runs in 2.1 innings.
Edwin Sanchez retired a batter before
Jackson Montgomery gave up seven runs in his 0.2 innings.
Brandon Stephens struck out three batters in his lone inning but also allowed three runs.
Both teams went scoreless in the first before Coppin put a three on the scoreboard in the second.
Angel Garcia and
Kenan Harvey drew walks to start the inning and
Terrell Milliner reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Hogan gave CSU the lead with an RBI single before Feliciano and Murillo drove in runs with ground balls.
FDU erupted for ten runs in the bottom half of the inning before Joyce retired the side in the third. The Knights tacked on two more in the fourth and fifth before
Nelson Grajales scored a run for the Eagles in the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, FDU scored another ten runs, and the Eagles only got an RBI single from Barczai in the seventh, scoring
Pedro Agosto from second after he and Hurtado drew free passes.
The same two teams will meet on Saturday, March 14 at 1 pm in the second game of a three-game NEC series.
