High-Scoring Bench Leads Men’s Hoops Past Delaware State

BALTIMORE – Jamari Piercy and Hussain Williams combined for 31 points off the bench to lead the Coppin State men's basketball team to a 65-47 victory over Delaware State on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena.  The Eagles move to 4-21 overall and 2-6 in the MEAC after sweeping the regular season series with the Hornets (6-16, 1-6 MEAC).

Coppin's bench scored 54 of the team's 65 points on the day, led by Piercy who scored a game-high 16 points, followed by Williams with 15. Daveyon Lydner added ten points, followed by Taj Thweatt with eight and Camaren Sparrow with five, all off the bench as well.

Piercy hit 8-of-12 from the floor while Williams made 5-of-11 to go with a pair of threes while grabbing a game-high eight rebounds. Lydner drained 6-of-7 shots from the stripe and dished out four assists.  Thweatt led Coppin defensively with three steals as Sparrow was credited with a career-high four blocks.

Coppin shot 47.1% from the floor while holding the Hornets to just 29.2% shooting and a pair of threes.

Delaware State started quickly, scoring the first nine points of the game before Coppin came right back with an 8-0 run. The Hornets extended their lead back to six and maintained a small lead throughout the half until the Eagles closed the period with another eight-straight points from the trio of Piercy, Williams, and Sparrow.

DeMariontay Hall opened the second half with a layup to put the Eagles on top, 28-23, but Delaware State refused to go away, scoring the next six points to retake the lead.

It was all Coppin from there as the Eagles embarked on a 9-0 run, culminating with a three from Williams with 15:16 left in regulation. The Hornets got to within a five-point deficit two times before Coppin pulled away with 12 straight points, five of which came from Lydner.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday, February 14 when they head to NC Central for a Battle of the Eagles in a 4:30 pm tipoff.
