Women’s Hoops Sets PEC Arena Record for Rebounds in Rout of Washington Adventist

BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team got contributions from all nine active players in an 81-49 rout of Washington Adventist on Tuesday night at PEC Arena.  The Eagles set a PEC record with 66 rebounds and improved to 6-18 on the season while the Shock fell to 10-7 overall.

The Navy & Gold shattered a facility record for rebounds in a game, eclipsing the 60 rebounds it tallied in a win over Virginia Union on November 29, 2014. Coppin's 66 rebounds are the most this century as the school record for rebounds is 77, set on December 9, 1989 vs. Baptist. The 66 rebounds are the 12th-most by an NCAA Division I team this season.

Khila Morris stuffed the stat sheet and was one of four CSU players in double figures, leading all players with 15 points to go with six rebounds, a season-high seven assists and two steals. Erin Henry followed with 14 points while Sydney Burris (13 points, 14 rebounds) and Patricia Sosa Lora (12 points, 14 rebounds) posted double-doubles.  Burris also blocked a season-high three shots.

Mickelle Lowry and Skylar Barnes added seven points apiece as Shanaii Gamble tallied six while grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds. Paris McBride came through with five points, and five assists and Jordyn Adderly posted two points and five rebounds.

Coppin outshot Washington Adventist, 37.3% to 27.4% while hitting six 3-pointers and 13-of-17 from the line.  The Eagles were credited with 28 offensive rebounds which turned into 24 second-chance points and forced the Shock into 23 turnovers, translating to 22 points off turnovers.

CSU never trailed despite a slow start, opening with a three by Lowry at the 7:05 mark of the first quarter. Morris added another three after the Shock got on the board and the Eagles closed the period on an 8-0 run with Sosa Lora accounting for half of those points.

The Eagles extended their advantage to as many as 38-18 with 2:56 left in the first half following a midrange jumper by Burris and a three by McBride before going into the locker room with a 40-22 lead.

WAU fought CSU tough for several minutes of the third, but Coppin began to pull away even more in the last five minutes. Henry nailed a pair of three and Barnes added another to build a 32-point lead and the Eagles held their largest lead of the game at 79-41 with 2:19 left in regulation.

Coppin seeks to extend its winning streak when it hosts Delaware State for a 2 pm tipoff on Saturday, February 7 on ESPN+.
