BALTIMORE – Khila Morris and
Erin Henry combined for 42 points as Coppin State's women's basketball team won its third-straight game with an 83-59 victory over Delaware State on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles improved to 7-18 on the year and evened their conference record to 4-4 while the Hornets fell to 4-18 overall and 1-6 in league play.
A senior from Bronx, N.Y., Morris led all players with 24 points while making 8-of-11 field goals and 7-of-9 from the line. Morris also had four rebounds, six assists and three steals while Henry tallied a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go with four 3-pointers.
Shanaii Gamble was also in double figures with ten points while finishing a rebound shy of a double-double. The sophomore forward added three assists and matched
Paris McBride with a team-high four steals.
Skylar Barnes followed up with nine points while McBride and
Sydney Burris tallied eight points apiece and
Patricia Sosa Lora chipped in with six.
Coppin set season-highs for points in a game, field goal percentage, and assists, hitting 31-of-57 (54.4%) shots from the floor while recording assists on 21 field goals. It was the best shooting percentage by the Eagles since they shot 68.6% from the field in a win at South Carolina State on February 15, 2020.
CSU never trailed, getting back-to-back threes by McBride to start the game before the Hornets got on the board at the 8:18 mark. Morris followed with a jumper and a three as the Eagles continued to run it up and led 27-12 after the first quarter. Coppin's 27 points was the team's most in any quarter this season.
The Eagles continued to pull away in the second quarter and Henry drained a pair of threes to close the half, putting the hosts up 45-25. Coppin's 45 points in the first 20 minutes was the team's most points in any half this season.
Back-to-back transition layups by Morris and Henry got Coppin off on the right foot to start the second half as the Eagles extended their lead to as many as 67-42 at the end of the period. CSU extended its lead to 83-55 with just over a minute remaining in the game before DSU had back-to-back baskets to end the game.
Coppin will look to go over .500 in MEAC play when it travels to South Carolina State on Thursday, February 12.
