McBride, Barnes Lead Women’s Hoops Past Morgan State, 69-45

BALTIMORE – Paris McBride led all players with 17 points and Skylar Barnes scored a season-high 15 as Coppin State's women's basketball team defeated Morgan State, 69-45 on Saturday afternoon at PEC Arena. The Eagles improved to 5-18 overall and 3-4 in the MEAC while the Bears fell to 3-20 on the year and 2-5 in league play.
 
McBride hit 5-of-7 from the floor with four 3-pointers and went 3-of-4 from the line in a very efficient outing. The senior from Richmond, Va., also had four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Barnes made 5-of-10 field goals with three 3-pointers and added five rebounds.
 
Khila Morris also finished in double figures with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists and was followed up by Erin Henry with nine points, Sydney Burris with eight points and ten rebounds, and Shanaii Gamble with five points and seven rebounds. Patricia Sosa Lora matched Burris with a team-high ten rebounds.
 
Coppin held the top 3-point shooting team in the MEAC to just 1-of-12 from downtown as the Bears did not hit a three until the 8:18 mark of the fourth quarters. Morgan shot just 30.6% of its field goals as Coppin outrebounded its archrival, 55-32.
 
The teams traded leads early in the game, but the Eagles never trailed after falling behind, 6-4 with 6:38 left in the first. Coppin responded with a 9-0 run with Morris accounting for the final five points over the stretch. Barnes closed the quarter with a couple free throws and hit a late three to put CSU up, 18-7 after the first.
 
CSU extended its lead to as many as 35-11 in the second after scoring 14 straight points, keyed by five points from McBride and back-to-back threes by Barnes. After a layup by Morgan, McBride hit a free throw in the closing seconds of the half as the 13 points by Morgan was the lowest in a half by a Coppin opponent this season.
 
The teams played virtually even in the second half, but Morgan never got within 19 points as Coppin led by as many as 66-37 with 4:56 left in regulation.
 
Coppin hosts Washington Adventist on Tuesday, February 3 at 6 pm in a non-conference tilt that was originally scheduled for Tuesday, January 27.
