NORFOLK, Va. – Sydney Burris led three Eagles in double figures with 12 points, but the Coppin State women's basketball team fell at Norfolk State, 69-58, on Saturday afternoon at Echols Memorial Hall. Coppin fell to 4-18 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC while the Spartans improved to 10-11 on the year and 5-1 in league play.
A senior from Milwaukee, Wisc., Burris matched a season-high in scoring, hitting 6-of-11 shots from the floor while finishing a rebound shy of a double-double. Burris was also credited with a team-high three steals.
Khila Morris and
Paris McBride added ten points apiece, followed by
Patricia Sosa Lora with six points and seven rebounds. Morris grabbed eight rebounds while McBride tallied five rebounds and two steals.
Coppin shot just 22.7% from the floor while taking 14 more shot attempts than the Spartans. The Eagles hit four 3-pointers to Norfolk's 11 while making 20-of-24 free throws. CSU forced NSU into 21 turnovers which translated into 24 points.
The Eagles opened the game on a 7-0 run, with baskets from Burris and Morris followed by a three by
Skylar Barnes. Norfolk State responded with eight-straight points before a transition three by Morris stopped the drought. The Spartans then closed the quarter with back-to-back threes to go up, 14-10.
Norfolk shot over 50% over the next two quarters and led 34-21 at the half and 58-38 after the third quarter.
Coppin outscored the Spartans, 20-11 in the fourth despite shooting just 26.3% for the quarter. The Eagles were bolstered by hitting 9-of-11 from the stripe but were unable to close the gap any further.
