BALTIMORE – Coppin State's women's basketball team went cold in the second and third quarters in a 64-51 loss to Howard on Thursday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles fell to 4-17 overall and 2-3 in the MEAC while the Bison improved to 14-7 on the year and 4-1 in league play.
Paris McBride led Coppin with 13 points while hitting all nine of her free throws while
Sydney Burris also finished in double figures with a season-high 12 points to go with six rebounds. McBride matched
Khila Morris with a team-high four assists apiece while Morris was credited with three steals and six rebounds.
Jahcelyn Hartfield hit 4-of-7 shots from the floor, including a 3-pointer for a career-high nine points and
Shanaii Gamble had seven rebounds, all coming in the first half.
Howard outshot Coppin, 44.4% to 27.3% while the Eagles stayed in the game by outrebounding the Bison, 39-28 while tallying 18 second-chance points. Coppin turned the ball over 24 times which led to 18 Howard points.
The Eagles held the lead after the first quarter, reaching their largest lead at the 2:48 mark after McBride hit three free throws after being fouled followed by a mid-range jumper by Hartfield. Howard came right back to tie the score before
Mickelle Lowry nailed a three in the closing seconds to make it 19-16 after the period.
Coppin missed its first nine shots of the second quarter as Howard regained the lead and then began to pull away using a 14-0 run in the third.
A three by
Skylar Barnes with 3:09 left in regulation got Coppin to within 56-49 and forced a timeout but four-straight Bison points sealed the win for the guests.
CSU heads to Norfolk State on Saturday, January 24 for an 11:00 am tipoff before hosting Washington Adventist on Tuesday, January 27 at 7 pm.
