Stafford Hits 1,000 Career Kills as Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches

BALTIMORE – TaKenya Stafford eclipsed the 1,000 career kill mark as Coppin State's volleyball team split a pair of matches during the final day of its Charm City Classic on Saturday. The Eagles (5-6) opened the day with a 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-19) sweep of Iona before falling to Princeton in three sets (25-11, 25-19, 25-21).

Needing just seven kills to reach 1,000 for her career, Stafford led all players with 13 kills on .211 hitting along with a pair of aces, a block and three digs. Ahzhi Coleman and Kayden Cupid hit .333 apiece with Coleman recording eight kills to Cupid's five.
 
Cherisse Atilano added five more kills, followed by Ivanna Luna with four and Ayanna Pharoah with three. Atilano matched Stafford with a pair of aces, as did Andrea Cintron who finished with 13 assists.
 
Azul Pilahg posted a double-double with 17 assists and 14 digs while Coco Figueroa led all players with 18 digs.
 
Coppin's defense held the Gaels to -.010 hitting, marking the first time since 2021 that the Eagles forced a non-conference team to a negative hitting percentage.

Stafford led the Eagles with nine kills to go with seven digs, followed by Pharoah with six kills and both Luna and Araya Garrison with four each. Garrison also led the team with three blocks while not committing and error on ten swings.  Pharoah, Luna and Coleman all had two blocks each.
 
Cintron led a trio of setters with 11 assists while Andrea Serrano added seven assists and five digs.  Figueroa once again led all players with 17 digs but the Eagles hit just .118 to Princeton's .336.
 
Up Next: Coppin will host the Maryland Terrapins on Tuesday, September 16 at 11:00 am on ESPN+.  This will be the first time the teams have met since the Eagles' volleyball team became an NCAA program in 1987.
