Rivera Strikes Out 11 as Baseball Falls to Le Moyne in Extra Innings

HANOVER, Md. – Reagan Rivera was dominant on the mound, but the Coppin State baseball team was unable to hang on to the lead as it fell to Le Moyne, 4-3 in 11 innings on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles' nine-game NEC win streak ends and they now stand at 13-24 overall and 11-8 in league play while the Dolphins improved to 13-22 on the year and 12-7 in the NEC.

Rivera got the no-decision despite allowing just three runs on eight hits while striking out a career-high 11 batters. A senior from San Diego, Calif., Rivera at one point retired 14 straight batters with nine strikeouts during the stretch. Rivera now has a league-leading 77 strikeouts which is the fourth-most in CSI single-season history, just ten off Jordan Hamberg's record of 87 in 2022.

Coppin scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning as Jayden Asencio put the Eagles on top 1-0 with a sacrifice fly which scored Daniel Moore from third.  Moore led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a double by Indy Anderson. Following Asencio's flyout to left, Bryce Thompson laced a shot over the left field fence for a two-run home run.

Le Moyne got on the board with an RBI groundout in the seventh before getting the equalizer in the ninth with two runs. After back-to-back one-out singles, the Dolphins lined a shot to right field, and a misplay by the defense allowed the hit to turn into a two-run single.

The Dolphins took their first lead in the 11th on a single, followed by a sac bunt and another single and the Eagles grounded into a game-ending double play in the bottom half.  Le Moyne turned four double plays in the game.

Anderson led Coppin with three base hits while Gavin Grutzmacher and Thompson also had multi-hit games.   Justin Ritz threw the final 2.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits in the loss.

The series resumes on Saturday, April 26 at 1:00 pm at Joe Cannon Stadium.
