Horton’s Career Night Lifts Men’s Hoops Past Morgan State in Overtime to Close Regular Season

BALTIMORE – Khali Horton scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Coppin State men's basketball team to an 82-75 overtime victory over Morgan State on Thursday night at PEC Arena.  The Eagles closed the regular season at 6-23 overall and 4-10 in the MEAC while the Bears fell to 13-17 on the year and 7-7 in league play.

  • Horton hit 7-of-12 from the floor with a career-high six threes and also made a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line, also setting a career-high.
  • Derrius Ward was also in double figures with 15 points to go with five rebounds, three assists a block and a steal.
  • Peter Oduro pitched in with nine points, followed by Toby Nnadozie with eight, Cam'Ron Brown and Camaren Sparrow with six and Jonathan Dunn with four. 
  • Zahree Harrison and Julius Ellerbe III also chipped in with three points apiece.
  • Brown dished out a season-high nine assists while Nnadozie and Ward were credited with three each.
  • Ward led the Eagles with five rebounds and Sparrow paced the team with three steals. Brown and Nnadozie also had a pair of steals.
  • Morgan State outshot Coppin, 48.2% to 43.8% and held a 46-24 advantage on the glass.
  • Coppin forced 23 turnovers and turned that into 33 points on the offensive end.  The Eagles also matched a season-high with nine 3-pointers and made 17-of-22 from the free throw line.
How it Happened
  • With the Eagles trailing, 69-66 following a layup by Ward, Brown forced a turnover, and Sparrow found Horton on the wing, and he was fouled shooting a three with 16 seconds remaining.
  • Horton buried all three free throws and Morgan State missed a jumper just before the buzzer, sending the game into overtime.
  • Horton and Ward nailed threes on back-to-back possessions to start the extra period, giving the Eagles the 75-69 lead.
  • Morgan State answered with a bucket and hit a pair of free throws to pull within 75-73 with 2:50 remaining.
  • Following a pair of Coppin misses, the Eagles forced another turnover and Horton sunk another three with 1:28 to go, putting CSU up by five.
  • A pair of Bears free throws made it a one-possession game before Brown converted on a jumper with just under a minute remaining.
  • Coppin forced another turnover and Ward made both free throws with 17 seconds left to seal the win.
  • Morgan State led by as many as 28-18 with 4:51 remaining in the first half, but Coppin used a 13-6 run in the early stages of the second half to tie the score at 44 with 12:31 to go.
  • Horton gave Coppin its first lead since early in the first half with a pair of free throws with 3:26 left in the second half.
  • The lead changed hands three times before the Eagles scored the final five points of regulation to force overtime.
