NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Jamar Whitehead's first collegiate base hit went for a home run, but Coppin State's baseball team fell to Central Connecticut State, 17-1, on Friday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field. The Eagles now stand at 4-19 overall and 2-5 in the NEC while the Blue Devils moved to 12-4 on the year and 9-1 in league play.
A sophomore from Baltimore, Whitehead's solo blast was one of two hits by Coppin on the day, with
Daniel Moore recording the other.
Anthony Divittorio also reached safely with a walk.
Reagan Rivera gave up just one earned run but came out of the game after 0.2 innings.
Jaedin Hurd was charged with three earned runs in the next 1.1 innings before
Isaiah Licorish and
Keith Wallace threw two innings each. Licorish gave up just one run on two hits in the outing while Wallace struck out a pair.
Central Connecticut scored ten in the first and three in the second before Licorish tossed a 1-2-3 third inning. Wallace also went the entire fifth inning without allowing a run before the Blue Devils scored three in the sixth.
After a groundout opened the seventh, Whitehead lined a shot over the fence in right field to put Coppin on the board. Divittorio reached on an error to follow but was doubled up on a flyout to left field.
Coppin returns to the diamond against CCSU in a 1 pm start on Saturday, March 29 at Dunkin' Park, the home of the Hartford Yard Goats, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
