Softball Drops Pair of Games at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Coppin State's softball team dropped a pair of MEAC games at Delaware State on Saturday afternoon, falling to 2-13 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.  The Eagles fell, 6-3, in game one, and 2-0 in the nightcap.

Game 1: Delaware State def. Coppin State, 6-3

Aniyah Haley had two of the team's hits while scoring a run and driving in another. Julianna Mejia also had an RBI and Kylee Sandino scored a pair of runs.  Debra Hyde tossed a complete game, allowing just four earned runs while striking out two in 6.0 innings.

The Hornets took a 2-0 lead with a two-run single in the second, but Coppin got those runs right back with two in the third. Haley doubled to the gap in left center, driving in Sandino all the way from first after she singled to start the inning. Haley later stole home to tie the score.

DSU retook the lead with a run in its half of the inning and it remained a one-run game until the Hornets broke it open with three runs in the sixth.

After Sandino reached on an error with one-out in the seventh, she scored following a single by Haley and another Hornets error. Coppin had the tying run at the plate but were unable to capitalize as the side was retired.

Game 2: Delaware State def. Coppin State, 2-0

Coppin outhit Delaware State, 4-2 with Haley, Mejia, Xzylia Maravilla and Leslie Sereno all reaching with base knocks. Tatjana Harris gave up just one earned run on two hits over her 6.0 innings.

DSU scored a run in its half of the first following a walk, two stolen bases and a groundout and that was all the hosts needed. The Hornets added another in the sixth but Coppin failed to score despite putting runners in scoring position in each of the first five innings.
