Baseball’s Late Comeback Against Wagner Falls Just Short

HANOVER, Md. – A late comeback by Coppin State's baseball team came short as the Eagles fell to Wagner, 13-9, on Friday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The loss dropped Coppin to 4-15 on the year and 2-2 in the Northeast Conference while the Seahawks evened their record at 10-10 overall to go with a 5-2 mark in league play.

Gavin Grutzmacher drove in three runs while going 1-for-3 with two runs and two walks as Indy Anderson and Sam Nieves had multi-hit games. Nieves also drove in a pair of runs as Gabe Breckenridge and Elijah Charlot scored two times each.

Reagan Rivera struck out seven in just 4.0 inning but was charged with four earned runs on seven hits in the loss. Park Roeder allowed just one earned run over the next 2.0 innings before Isaiah Licorish closed it out, giving up three runs in the final 3.0 innings.

Wagner got on the board with a two-run home run in the first which Coppin matched in its half of the inning. Grutzmacher walked to start the game and after Daniel Moore was plunked, Anderson laid down a bunt single to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Nieves scored Grutzmacher before Jayden Asencio drove in Moore on a fielder's choice.

Rivera struck out two in the second and the side in the third to keep the game tied at two before Wagner took advantage of a pair of Eagles errors to score four runs. Roeder kept the deficit at 6-2 with a scoreless fifth but the Seahawks put another four-spot on the board in the sixth with an error leading to three unearned runs.

The guests scored three more in the seventh to take a 13-2 lead, but Coppin fought back with a pair of runs in the seventh to keep the game alive. A double by Breckenridge drove in Charlot, who was plunked to start the inning, and he later scored on a wild pitch.

Coppin scored five in the ninth with Grutzmacher going opposite field for a three-run triple.  He eventually scored on another wild pitch, and a triple by Nieves scored Pranav Sundar who had single just prior.

The same two teams will meet at 2:00 pm on Saturday, March 22 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
