HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team held the lead after two innings but fell to UMass, 22-7, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles fell to 2-7 on the season while the Minutemen improved to 3-3.
Indy Anderson,
Daniel Moore and
Sam Nieves all had multi-hit games with Nieves and
Gabe Breckenridge also have a pair of RBI. Nieves and
Jayden Asencio both slugged home runs while
Gavin Grutzmacher had an inside-the-park home run as well.
Kaden Straily threw the first 5.0 innings, allowing eight runs while striking out four in the loss.
Michael Matthews got his only out via a strikeout and he was followed by
Luke Corcoran and
Keith Wallace who gave up nine runs over the final 1.2 innings.
UMass scored a pair of runs in the first before Grutzmacher cut that deficit in half with an inside-the-park home run to left center. Coppin took the lead in the second on a two-run single by Breckenridge, allowing Moore and
Bryce Thompson to score.
The Minutemen tied the score at three after the third and retook the lead with a two-run fourth at 5-3. Asencio cranked a home run over the right field fence in the fourth, cutting the deficit to just one run, but UMass answered with another four runs in the fifth.
Anderson drove in
Anthony Divittorio with a double to left, and he was followed by a two-run bomb from Nieves to make it a 9-7 ballgame.
It was all Minutemen from then on as they scored six in the sixth and seven more in the seventh to pick up the win.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 4 when they travel to play Georgetown in a 3 pm start at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
