Baseball Can’t Overcome Third Inning Deficit in Loss to UMBC

HANOVER, Md. – Gavin Grutzmacher drove in four runs as the Coppin State baseball team fell to UMBC, 19-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles fell to 4-14 on the year while the Retrievers improved to 5-9.

Grutzmacher finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and a triple while Curtis Battle added a pair of hits with three runs and an RBI. Gabe Breckenridge also drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles.

Coppin's six pitchers combined to give up ten earned runs on just four hits but the Eagles walked 12 and also hit 12 batters.

UMBC scored 11 runs over the first three innings before Coppin got on the board with two runs in its half of the third. With Battle on first after a single, Grutzmacher hit a high popup that was misplayed by the second baseman, allowing Battle to score. Daniel Moore then drove in Grutzmacher with a single to right.

The Retrievers got both runs back in the fourth before Battle, Breckenridge and Grutzmacher all had RBI singles in Coppin's portion of the frame.  Breckenridge drew a bases-loaded walk before Grutzmacher cleared the bases with a three-run triple, cutting the deficit to 13-9.

A sacrifice fly by UMBC in the sixth made it a five-run game before the guests sealed the win in the seventh with five runs without a base hit and two errors.

Coppin hosts Wagner in a three-game NEC series on March 21-23.   Friday's game is set for 3 pm, followed by a 2 pm start on Saturday and 1 pm on Sunday.
