LAKEWOOD, Wash. – Coppin State's baseball team was edged, 3-2 in the Seattle HBCU Series finale by Seattle University on Sunday afternoon at Fort Steilacoom Park. The Eagles fell to 4-13 on the season while the Redhawks improved to 8-11.
Gavin Grutzmacher and
Brennen Barczai had two hits apiece and both drew a walk while
Samuel Nieves and
Gabe Breckenridge had the other base knocks. Barczai and
Daniel Moore scored the lone runs for Coppin.
Kaden Straily took the loss despite throwing 6.0 strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out four.
Justin Ritz pitched the final 2.0 innings and gave up just one hit.
Seattle took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first which Coppin matched in the third. Moore reached with two outs, and following a walk and two wild pitches was able to score the tying run.
The Redhawks got the run back in their half of the inning and extended the lead with another run in the fifth. Coppin cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth as Barczai scored on a passed ball after reaching on a walk earlier in the frame.
Ritz started the seventh and allowed a one-out single but retired the final five batters he faced. The Eagles threatened in the ninth with a one-out double by Breckenridge before Grutzmacher singled off the pitcher but the final two batters came up empty.
CSU hosts UMBC in a 3 pm start on Tuesday, March 18 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
