Women’s Hoops Falls To Top-Seeded Norfolk State in MEAC Semifinals

Box Score NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State's women's basketball team dropped its MEAC Semifinal matchup at top-seeded Norfolk State, 72-33 on Friday afternoon at Scope Arena.  The Eagles fell to 18-14 overall and will await a possible postseason bid on Selection Sunday.

  • MEAC Defensive Player of the Year Laila Lawrence led the Eagles with her league-high 21st double-double of the season, recording 11 points and ten rebounds along with four blocks.
  • Cire Worley followed with nine points and Angel Jones pitched in with six points and six rebounds. Dani McTeer added three points to go with eight rebounds.
  • Norfolk State outshot Coppin, 40.6 percent to 20.3 percent and made nine threes compared to just one for the Eagles.  The Eagles also made just 4-of-13 (30.8%) from the free throw line.
  • Kierra Wheeler led the Spartans with 22 points and nine rebounds while MEAC Player of the Year Diamond Johnson added 17 points.
  • NSU had 18 assists on 28 made baskets.
How it Happened
  • Worley opened the game with a three from the corner, but Norfolk State scored the next 14 points with eight from Wheeler.
  • The Eagles got back on the board with a layup from Jones and she added a midrange jumper just under two minutes later to close the period.
  • A 9-0 run by the Spartans top start the second was virtually matched by a couple field goals from Lawrence, but Norfolk buried a three to take a 29-13 lead into halftime.
  • Norfolk State came out of intermission strong with another, 7-0 run, and following another bucket from Lawrence, score another seven-straight before Kylah Moore ended the drought with a breakaway layup at the 3:41 mark.
  • Coppin matched Norfolk the rest of the quarter, but the Spartans maintained the large lead for the remainder of regulation.
