Baseball Drops First Two Games at SeattleU as Part of HBCU Classic

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Seattle University on Friday afternoon at Bannerwood Park as part of the Seattle HBCU Classic.  The Eagles dropped the opener, 7-3, and game two by an 11-1 margin.

Bryce Thompson had a pair of hits while Gavin Grutzmacher, Daniel Moore and Brennan Barczai all drove in runs for Coppin. Gabe Breckenridge added a hit and also drew a walk.
 
On the mound, Reagan Rivera went 6.1 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out seven.  Justin Ritz tossed the final 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out one.
 
Seattle scored five runs over the first four innings before Coppin plated a pair of runs in the fifth.  Grutzmacher drove in the first run with an RBI groundout to drive in Thompson before Moore flew out to center, which allowed Anthony Divittorio to score from third.
 
Rivera threw a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning with two strikeouts and Barczai added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it a two-run game.  Scoring on the drive to left field was Samuel Nieves who singled to lead off the inning.
 
Rivera fanned two more in the sixth to keep the game in reach but the Redhawks tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh while retiring the final six Eagles to take game one.

Grutzmacher and Thompson both had a pair of hits for the Eagles with Grutzmacher driving in the team's only run. Thompson also drew a walk and scored while Moore also drew a walk.
 
Luke Corcoran tossed the first 6.0 innings, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two. Noah Hogan gave up two earned runs in his lone inning before Isaiah Licorish faced the final two batters.
 
Corcoran held Seattle scoreless in the first before giving up one in the second and four in the third. He threw a 1-2-3 fourth before Grutzmacher doubled down the line in left in the fifth, driving in Thompson who walked to start the frame.
 
Seattle got the run back in its half of the inning, and after a 1-2-3 sixth, the hosts erupted for a four-run seventh before ending the game with a run in the eighth.
 
Up Next: The three-game series is scheduled to close with a 5 pm first pitch on Saturday, March 15.
