HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team mustered just three hits in a 22-2 loss to UMass on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles fell to 2-6 on the season while the Minutemen improved to 2-3.
Curtis Battle had a two-run single in the sixth inning after coming into the game as a pinch runner earlier in the game.
Indy Anderson and
Gavin Grutzmacher also had base hits for Coppin while Grutzmacher,
Anthony Divittorio and
Jayden Asencio also reached safely via walks.
Jeremiah Eneix allowed five runs in the start while
Jaedin Hurd and
Park Roeder threw the next five innings while combining for seven strikeouts.
Tyrone Lake also retired a batter before
Brandon Stephens struck out three in his 1.1 innings of work.
UMass erupted for six runs in the first before adding a run in the second and seven in the third.
Roeder froze the final batter to get out of the third inning before getting a 1-2-3 fourth. He also got out of the fifth unscathed despite a leadoff walk before the Minutemen added seven insurance runs in the sixth.
Coppin got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth as Anderson singled to start the inning off a relief pitcher.
Daniel Moore and
Jamar Whitehead were plunked to load the bases before Battle's single up the middle which drove in two.
The rubber game of the series between the two squads is set for 1 pm on Sunday, March 2 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
