TOWSON, Md. – Coppin State's softball team led throughout most of the game but fell at Towson, 8-6, on Thursday afternoon at Tiger Stadium to open the DeMarini Tiger Clash. The Eagles now stand at 0-5 on the season while the Tigers moved to 4-8.
The first five batters in Coppin's lineup all had at least one hit and an RBI with
Aniyah Haley recording a pair of hits including a double.
Xzylia Maravilla also launched a home run while
Paris Pinkston and
Natasha Arroyo added doubles near the bottom of the order.
Debra Hyde took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out one over 4.2 innings of work.
Tatjana Harris gave up just one walk with one strikeout in the final 1.1 innings.
The Eagles scored twice in the top of the first on back-to-back singles by
Giselle Ulloa and
Brooklyn Tapusoa to drive in
Julianna Mejia and Ulloa. Towson got a run back in its half of the frame before Arroyo scored on an error in the second for the Eagles.
Hyde held the Tigers scoreless in the second before Maravilla's solo shot over the fence in left with two outs in the third. Towson came right back with two in the third, cutting Coppin's lead to 4-3.
Pinkston doubled down the line to start the fourth and came around to score on Haley's double. Mejia followed with a single to score Haley, but Towson took its first lead of the game with a four-run fourth.
CSU went down in order in both the fifth and sixth and double play ended its rally to end the game.
Coppin returns to action on Saturday, March 1 when it takes on Colgate and Bryant before playing Colgate and Towson once again on Sunday afternoon.
