BALTIMORE – Howard University used a strong fourth quarter to defeat Coppin State's women's basketball team, 70-60 on Monday night at PEC Arena.  The Eagles now stand at 16-11 overall and 7-4 in the MEAC while the Bison improved to 17-9 on the year and 10-1 in league play.

Checking the Box Score
  • Angel Jones led Coppin with 15 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists while freshman Mickelle Lowry followed with a season-high 14 points with three 3-pointers.
  • Laila Lawrence posted her 17th double-double of the season, recording 12 points and 12 rebounds to go with three steals and a block.
  • Tiffany Hammond and Dani McTeer chipped in with six points apiece while Arielle-Vadrelle Belinga and Niyah Gaston tallied four and three points, respectively.
  • Howard outshot Coppin, 42.9% to 37.5% and made 8-of-16 shots from deep.
  • The Bison, who had four players in double figures, scored 21 points off 14 CSU turnovers.
How it Happened
  • Coppin scored the first six points of the game with back-to-back layups from Lawrence along with a bucket from Hammond.
  • That six-point margin was the largest by either team in the first three quarters which featured eight lead changes and four ties.
  • Howard cut the deficit to a basket with a pair of free throws at the 3:26 mark of the first quarter before Belinga had back-to-back scores, extending the lead back to six.
  • A late three by the Bison cut the deficit back to 16-14 before McTeer answered with one of her own in the closing seconds, giving CSU a 19-14 advantage after one.
  • The second quarter was back-and-forth with Lowry hitting a jumper with ten seconds left, giving Coppin a 35-31 halftime lead.
  • Much of the same occurred in the third quarter with Jones converting with three ticks left, giving Coppin a 49-47 advantage heading into the fourth.
  • Howard opened the fourth on a 10-0 run, taking a 57-49 lead at the 5:57 mark.
  • A jumper by Jones and a three in the corner from Gaston got Coppin to within three with just under five minutes to play.
  • The Bison pulled away with another 9-0 run as threes from Lowry and Lawrence were unable to pose much of a late threat.
Up Next: Coppin heads to Delaware State on Saturday, March 1 at 2 pm before closing the regular season at home with home games against Maryland Eastern Shore (Mar. 3) and Morgan State (Mar. 6).
