HANOVER, Md. - Coppin State's baseball game was unable to overcome an early 5-0 deficit as it fell to Virginia Military Institute, 13-2, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Eagles now stand at 1-3 on the season while the Keydets remain perfect at 6-0.
Daniel Moore and
Jayden Asencio both had a pair of hits for the Eagles, who had just six base hits on the day.
Indy Anderson and
Sam Nieves had the others with Anderson's going for a double. Anderson also drew a pair of walks while Moore had the team's lone RBI.
Jeremiah Eneix was credited with a loss, allowing seven runs on six hits while striking out four in 3.1 innings.
Justin Ritz tossed the next 1.2 innings and was charged with one earned run.
Luke Corcoran retired four batters before
Michael Matthews struck out a pair while giving up a hit in the final 0.2 innings.
VMI struck quick with a three-run home run in the first and they tacked on runs in both the second and third to take a five-run lead.
Coppin got a run back in the bottom half as Anderson scored as Nieves stole second and advanced on a throwing error. Anderson reached with a double to left center before getting to third on Nieves' single to right.
The Keydets scored two in the fourth to end Eneix's day on the rubber. They scored another in the fifth before Corcoran threw a scoreless sixth.
Corcoran got a groundout to start the seventh but VMI scored three and both of Matthews' inherited runners scored before he struck out a pair to end the inning.
Moore singled home
Curtis Battle in the bottom of the seventh as Battle was hit by a pitch and got to third following a walk and a wild pitch.
The Eagles and Keydets close their season on Sunday, February 23 at 1 pm at Joe Cannon Stadium.
