WASHINGTON, D.C. – Khali Horton's 18 points were not enough as Coppin State's men's basketball team fell at Georgetown, 97-67, on Monday night at McDonough Arena. The Eagles fell to 2-14 on the season while the Hoyas improved to 9-4 overall.
A junior from Erie, Pa., Horton hit 5-of-9 shots from deep and 3-of-4 from the line to lead the Eagles in scoring. Horton's 18 points were his most since scoring 19 in the season opener against Maryland while adding two rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Jamari Piercy and
Tyler Koenig also scored in double figures, recording 13 and ten points, respectively. Piercy also had five rebounds and three blocks while Koenig matched him with five rebounds.
Chris Morgan and
Torrin Andrews added six points apiece with Morgan going for six rebounds and two blocks on the defensive end. Andrews' three assists were second to
Hassan Perkins who dished out a season-high seven assists.
Taj Thweatt led CSU with seven rebounds.
Georgetown had five players reach double figures, outshot Coppin, 55.0% to 41.0%, made 20 free throws to the Eagles' nine, and scored 21 points off Coppin's 14 turnovers.
The Hoyas scored the first eight points of the game before
Baasil Saunders hit a three at the 16:24 mark. Georgetown answered with a dunk, starting another 10-0 run and extended its lead to 53-25 at the half. Coppin played nearly even with Georgetown over the final 20 minutes but pulled no closer than a 22-point margin.
CSU closes out the calendar year on Monday, December 29 when it hosts UMBC in a 6 pm start on ESPN+.
