Men’s Hoops Puts Up Great Effort in Season Opening Loss to Maryland

BALTIMORE — The Coppin State men's basketball team came within striking distance of the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday night at CFG Bank Arena, pulling to within seven points early in the second half before Maryland pulled away for an 83-61 victory.

Junior Khali Horton paced the Eagles with 19 points, including four 3-pointers, while also making 5-of-6 from the line.  Tyler Koenig was also in double figures with 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting while making all six of his free throws.

The Eagles were narrowly outshot, 45.5% to 42.9% and were outrebounded by a slim 34-29 margin.  Maryland made ten 3-pointers and hit 23-of-25 free throws (92.0%) compared to seven triples and 12-of-16 free throws for Coppin. CSU committed 20 turnovers, which led to 30 points for the Terps, including 14 fastbreak points.

The Terrapins led 47-32 at the half, but the Eagles opened the second half with great intensity. Torrin Andrews buried a three with 14:26 left in regulation, cutting the deficit to just 54-47, but after the teams traded buckets, Maryland went on a 22-2 run before Andrews stopped the long drought with a midrange jumper with just under three minutes left.

Andrews finished with nine points for the Eagles, and he was followed by DeMariontay Hall with six. Taj Thweatt led all players with seven rebounds while Camaren Sparrow and Daveyon Lydner had three assists apiece.  Hassan Perkins dished out a pair of assists to go with his four points.

Coppin returns to the court on Wednesday, November 5 for a 6:30 pm tipoff at La Salle which will air on ESPN+.
