DURHAM, N.C. – Despite a match-high 21 kills from
TaKenya Stafford, the Coppin State volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 27-25) decision at N.C. Central on Sunday afternoon at McDougald-McClendon Center. The loss was Coppin's first in conference play this season and it now stands at 17-11 overall and 10-1 in the MEAC.
Stafford led all players with her fourth 20+ kill match this season while hitting .222 on 63 attempts. A redshirt senior from Los Angeles, Calif., Stafford also posted a double-double with 12 digs to go over the 1,000 career digs mark in her career. Stafford also added two aces, two assists and a block and has just under 900 digs in a Coppin uniform.
Cherisse Atilano also notched a double-double, her 11
th of the season, with 14 kills and 17 digs to go with an ace.
Andrea Cintron followed her with five kills, 11 assists and nine digs.
The rest of the Eagles combined for just 17 kills and nine errors as N.C. Central outhit Coppin, .187 to .159. N.C. Central also tallied 12 total blocks to Coppin's seven.
Azul Pilahg led a trio of CSU setters with 21 assists and 15 digs, good for her fifth double-double of the season.
Andrea Serrano also finished with 12 assists and seven digs.
Coco Figueroa had a team-high 22 digs while
Ahzhi Coleman had three solo blocks.
The service game once again played a big factor as Coppin had 11 service errors and eight receiving errors.
Coppin hosts Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday, November 7 at 6 pm in a match where CSU will honor all faculty & staff in attendance.
