STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Khila Morris scored a career-high 23 points while
Patricia Sosa Lora posted a double-double as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell at Penn State, 90-62, on Wednesday afternoon at the Nittany Lions' Rec Hall. The Eagles, who were playing their third Power Conference program already this season, fell to 1-3 on the year while Penn State improved to 3-0.
A sophomore from Bronx, N.Y., Morris hit an impressive 9-of-14 from the floor, including a three and four free throws to surpass her previous high of 16 points which she hit earlier this season against Lincoln. Morris added four rebounds, three assists and a steal.
Sosa Lora, who was making just her second appearance of the season, matched a career-high with 16 rebounds while hitting a career-high 10-of-12 free throws. Six of her game-high ten rebounds came on the offensive glass as she posted the fifth double-double of her career after spending the last two seasons at Xavier (La.) of the NAIA.
Also in double figures was
Shanaii Gamble with 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
Skylar Barnes added four points with two assists,
Paris McBride dished out a game-high four assists and
Kylie Wells also hit a field goal for two points.
Coppin made 37.3% of its field goals with two three-pointers and 16-of-24 (66.7%) free throws. Penn State outrebounded the Eagles, 51-25 with 23 second-chance points, 23 points off 25 CSU turnovers and 20 fastbreak points.
The Nittany Lions had four players in double figures, led by
Kiyomi McMiller with 21 points.
CSU stayed with Penn State throughout the first half, trailing just 23-17 after the first, and 37-28, at the half. The Nittany Lions outscored Coppin, 33-14, in the third to pull away, outshooting the Eagles, 55.5% to 26.7% while hitting three 3-pointers and 10-of-11 free throws.
Coppin put up a great effort in the fourth, playing even with the hosts over the final ten minutes.
