BALTIMORE – Cherisse Atilano led all players with 15 kills, leading Coppin State's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-14) victory over North Carolina Central on Sunday afternoon at PEC Arena. With the win, CSU improved to 9-9 overall and 3-0 in the MEAC while NCCU fell to 4-12 on the year and 1-3 in league play.
A freshman from Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, Atilano hit .324 on 37 attempts while committing just three errors. Atilano added 12 digs for a double-double to go with two aces and a block.
Ivanna Luna and
TaKenya Stafford were also in double figures, finishing with 11 and ten kills, respectively, with Stafford notching a double-double with 14 digs as well.
Kayden Cupid added seven kills and a team-high four blocks and she was followed by
Ahzhi Coleman with five kills and
Andrea Cintron with four kills.
Cintron assisted on 22 kills while
Azul Pilahg added 21 assists to go with 14 digs as Coppin outhit NC Central, .265 to .114.
Coco Figueroa finished an assist shy of a double-double while leading all players with 23 digs as she keeps nearing the 1,000 career digs milestone.
Coppin dominated in its three sets where they took the frame, combining to hit .383 in those sets with 50 kills to just nine errors.
In the third set, CSU had nine kills to 11 attacking errors but stayed close as the frame featured ten ties and five lead changes.
CSU will return to action on Monday, October 6 when it hosts South Carolina State in a 6 pm MEAC matchup.
