BALTIMORE – A trio of Eagles recorded double-digit kills as the Coppin State volleyball team fought off a pesky NJIT squad, 3-1 (25-23, 27-25, 24-26, 25-23) on Tuesday night at PEC Arena. With the win, the Eagles improved to 14-9 overall while the Highlanders fell to 4-17 on the year.
Cherisse Atilano and
TaKenya Stafford both notched double-doubles with Atilano tallying 16 kills on .227 hitting and 11 digs to go with a pair of blocks. Stafford finished with 12 kills and 11 digs along with two blocks, but
Ivanna Luna stole the show with 13 kills on an impressive .476 swinging to go with three blocks.
Ayanna Pharoah had an errorless six kills on 11 swings, followed by
Kayden Cupid with four,
Deviana Walker with three and both
Ahzhi Coleman and
Andrea Cintron with two each. Cupid led the Eagles with four blocks while Coleman and
McKenzie Parks had three apiece.
Andrea Serrano had a team-high 28 assists to go with five digs and three aces while
Azul Pilahg added 20 assists and eight digs. Cintron also saw time at setter with seven assists as the trio quarterbacked the offense to a .255 hitting percentage.
Coco Figueroa led all players with 19 digs and matched Serrano with three aces while the CSU defense held NJIT to a .212 hitting percentage with a season-high 11 blocks.
Coppin returns to the court on Thursday, October 23 when it hosts Howard in a 6 pm 'Whiteout Match' involving the top two teams in the MEAC.
