LARAMIE, Wyo. – TaKenya Stafford tallied 13 kills while setters
Azul Pilahg and
Kahea Carvalho notched double-doubles as Coppin State's volleyball team fell to UAlbany, 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-20) on Saturday to close out the UniWyo Invitational. The Eagles fell to 4-11 on the season before opening conference play next week.
Stafford recorded her 13 kills on 50 swings while adding eight digs and an aces. Pilahg tallied 19 assists and 12 digs and Carvalho added 11 assists with an identical 12 digs to lead the team, but the Eagles hit just .179 as a team to the Great Danes' .274.
Gabriela Zuquelo recorded eight kills with no errors to hit a team-high .471 and added seven digs. She was followed by
Sophia Bertotti Metoyer with six, both
Ezgi Kucuk and
Payton Swinton with five, and
McKenzie Parks with four. Parks led the way with a pair of blocks.
With the first set tied at 12, UAlbany scored three-straight and never looked back with Coppin pulling no closer than two points. The Great Danes went on a 6-0 run early in the second set to take a 10-4 lead, but the Eagles slowly clawed their way back into it, pulling to within 24-23 with a 5-1 run. However, UAlbany closed out the frame with a kill to win 25-23. In the decider, the Great Danes scored eight of the first ten points and they held on to the advantage the rest of the way.
Coppin opens MEAC play on Friday, September 27 when it hosts Delaware State in a 6 pm start on ESPN+.
