LARAMIE, Wyo. – Coppin State's volleyball team fell to University of Wyoming, 3- (25-14, 25-14, 25-21) on Thursday night in the opening match of the UniWyo Invitational. The Eagles fell to 4-9 on the season while the Cowgirls moved to 7-2.
Wyoming outhit Coppin, .287 to .026 while recording 12 blocks to the Eagles' zero.
TaKenya Stafford led Coppin with seven kills, followed by
Gabriela Zuquelo with five,
Sophia Bertotti Metoyer with four and both
Ezgi Kucuk and
McKenzie Parks with three apiece.
Azul Pilahg had a team-high 13 assists to go with seven digs while
Kahea Carvalho tallied seven assists and nine digs along with three aces.
Despite playing in just two sets,
Alessia Gallo recorded a season-high 15 digs.
The Cowgirls led from start to finish in the opener as Coppin failed to string together a run. Wyoming began to pull away with a 4-0 run, taking a 17-9 advantage and never looking back.
After falling behind, 8-3, in the second, Coppin ran off four-straight points with a pair of kills from Zuquelo and an ace by Pilahg. The Eagles tied the score at ten before Wyoming scored nine of the next ten points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Coppin played much better in the third, taking a 5-3 lead with Kucuk recording a pair of early kills. Wyoming rallied to tie the score at seven before taking a 10-7 lead. The Eagles kept it close, pulling to within 21-20 following kills from
Deviana Walker, Parks and Bertotti Metoyer. Bertotti Metoyer added another kill to keep Coppin alive before the Cowgirls finished it off with a CSU service error.
The Eagles face another stuff test on Friday night when they battle University of Utah in a 5 pm start on the Mountain West Network. Coppin finishes the Invitational with UAlbany at 12 pm on Saturday, September 21.
