EASTON, Mass. – Coppin State's baseball team fell in its Northeast Conference series finale at Stonehill, 16-8, on Sunday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field. The Eagles fell to 12-23 on the season and 11-13 in the NEC while the Skyhawks moved to 15-22 on the year and 10-11 in league play.
Anthony Divittorio was the only Eagles player with a multi-hit game while
Kai Holm and
Braylon Watson matched him with a pair of RBI.
Chris Marte and
Victor Alongi both had a hit and a pair of walks, and Alongi and
Brody Black scored two times each.
Five CSU pitchers combined to give up six earned run on seven hits while walking 13 Skyhawks and plunking four.
Christian Pareja retired just two batters in the start and allowed two runs on one hit.
Brandon Stephens gave up five runs in his lone inning before
John Neeld was charged with six runs over the next 2.1 innings. In his 2.0 innings,
Michael Matthews allowed three runs on just one hit.
Clay Thompson went the final 2.0 innings and gave up just one walk while striking out five of the seven batters he faced.
Stonehill scored two runs in its first at-bat before Coppin put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the second inning. After an error started the inning, Marte, Black and Alongi all drew walks to score the first run of the inning. Watson drove in two runs on a fielder's choice before Divittorio singled home Alongi. Holm delivered his first sacrifice fly of the game to left field, driving in Watson to give Coppin a 5-2 lead.
The lead was short lived as Stonehill scored eight runs on just four hits in its half of the frame. The Skyhawks tacked on another run in the third, two in the fourth and three in the sixth, extending their lead to 16-5.
Damon Gaither scored a run in the seventh on a wild pitch after being hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. A passed ball advanced him all the way to third just prior to the wild pitch.
Thompson got a lineout and a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh before the Eagles cut into the deficit with an RBI single by Divittorio before another sacrifice fly by Holm. Thompson struck out the side, all swinging, in the eighth, and only
Samuel Nieves reached for CSU in the ninth with a leadoff walk and a stolen base.
Coppin hosts VMI at 3 pm on Wednesday, May 1 before welcoming Central Connecticut State for a three-game NEC series on May 3-5.
