Bullpen Throws Four Innings Without an Earned Run in Loss to VMI

HANOVER, Md. – Angel Colon had a multi-hit game while the bullpen threw four innings without allowing an earned run as Coppin State's baseball team fell to Virginia Military Institute, 8-2, on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Cannon Stadium.  The Eagles fell to 12-24 on the year while the Keydets improved to 25-23.

Colon finished 2-for-4 and had the team's only RBI while Jaedin Hurd, Jackson Montgomery, Christian Pareja and Justin Ritz all threw an inning. Hurd struck out a pair while Montgomery and Ritz faced the minimum with one strikeout apiece.  Pareja gave up a pair of hits but the run he allowed was unearned.

Jayden Asencio doubled and scored a run as Chris Marte scored the other.  Damon Gaither also had a base hit and drew a walk.

VMI got out to an early lead off starting pitcher Giovanni Canales with runs in the first two innings, but Coppin cut the lead in half in the second as Marte scored on a wild pitch.  Marte reached earlier on a single before getting to third on a double by Asencio.

Canales held the Keydets scoreless in the third but VMI put five on the scoreboard in the fourth despite recording just two hits and taking advantage of two errors, two walks and two hit batsmen.  The senior righthander stranded the bases loaded in the fifth, his final inning of work where he allowed five earned runs.

Colon drove in Asencio in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-2 before VMI got the run back in the eighth.

Coppin hosts Central Connecticut State for a three-game NEC series on May 3-5 at Joe Cannon Stadium.
